Most dependency cases begin with a report to the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS). The report can be generated through a call to the Hotline or through a formal report by a teacher, clergy, doctor or other person mandated to report suspicious circumstances.

Unfortunately, once DCFS is involved, it can be a nightmare for parents. Because of the consequences of an adverse (and often unsupported) finding, you will want an experienced dependency law attorney representing your interests and fighting to protect your rights and your family.

Although not required, DCFS may request a Team Decision Meeting (TDM), typically held in their offices where a safety plan may be implemented, and may include drug testing, counseling and required classes. You may have your attorney present at the meeting.

If a DCFS social worker determines that the children may be in imminent danger, they will be detained and placed in foster care. There will be a hearing and you are entitled to have a lawyer present. You can utilize a court appointed attorney or you can retain private counsel (see, Why You Want a Dependency Law Attorney).
